Criminals have gotten crafty when it comes to scamming victims. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has set up a hotline to help callers figure out if they’re being duped.
A deputy will answer the so-called “Call Before You Pay” hotline from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The caller can explain the situation so the deputy can advise whether or not it’s a likely scam.
The hotline can be accessed at 239-252-CALL (2255).
Officials said one of the newest scams is a text message indicating the person’s bank or credit card company needs personal information like a Social Security number or PIN.
“Criminals are constantly coming up with new ways to approach potential victims,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “What we would like people to do is contact us before they respond to a request that seems unusual.”
