Monday, August 24, 2015 marks the first day of school for Lee County students. The Fort Myers Police Department would like to take this time and remind all motorists to be cognizant of the increased vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic associated with this occasion.
“The first day back from summer vacation is usually hectic for traveling because a majority of parents like to see their children off on the first day of school. The extra congestion means we need to increase our awareness as motorists,” according to Operations Bureau Captain Jim Mulligan.
The Fort Myers Police Department will increase patrols to ensure our youth are safe in and around bus stops, crosswalks and school zones. The additional patrols will also focus on parking issues such as illegally parking in front of hydrants, in fire lanes and on medians. Extra attention will also target the operation of school buses stopping to pick up and drop off children. “When a bus stops, traffic must also stop in both directions unless the roadway is divided by at least five feet of space,” Captain Mulligan added.
FMPD would also like to remind parents of the City of Fort Myers Youth Protection Ordinance as it relates to curfews.
- A minor may not remain in any public place or restricted area within the city limits between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. of the following day, Sunday through Thursday, except in the case of a legal holiday.
- A minor may not be or remain in any public place or restricted area within the city limits between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and legal holidays.
- A minor who has been suspended, expelled, and/or truant from school may not be or remain in any public place or restricted area within the city limits during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during any day that his school is in session.
FMPD will have additional personnel throughout the city over the back to school weekend to ensure our youth will have a fresh start Monday morning.
