A group of recent graduates of the Fort Myers Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy is looking to form an alumni association and invites all past class members to an upcoming organizational meeting. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 21 at 6 p.m. at 4312 Michigan Avenue in Fort Myers.
Similar to other Citizen Police Academy Alumni Associations across the state and country, Fort Myers’ CPAAA would be committed to promoting continuing education and training, supporting the continued growth and development of the CPA and participating in activities that contribute to the well-being of the community.
“The Spring class of the CPA really enjoyed and appreciated learning how our FMPD works to serve and protect us each and every day,” said Melinda Isley, Spring 2015 class member. “We don’t want our education and support to end just because our class is over, s¬o we are looking to join with past and future class members to form this alumni association and continue our commitment to working with FMPD for the betterment of our community.”
In order to form and participate with other CPAAA’s across the state and country, the Fort Myers CPAAA will need to form a board of directors, incorporate bylaws, collect nominal annual membership dues, hold monthly membership and board meetings and have a CPA coordinator from FMPD.
CPA gives residents a better understanding of the Fort Myers Police Department, how community members can work in partnership with the department and arms them with a wealth of knowledge and understanding of what the Fort Myers Police Department does on a daily basis. Classes are held in the Spring and Fall of each year and run for 10 consecutive weeks with additional optional classes on weekends. Anyone interested can apply by downloading an application from the FMPD’s website at www.fmpolice.com. “Our citizen police academy has been building strong relationships with community members through education, training and insight for close to twenty years now,” said Police Chief Doug Baker.
