On Saturday, October 12, 2013 the Fort Myers Police Department will walk in the park to bring attention to Crime Prevention Awareness Month. October is the official month for recognizing the practice of crime prevention as well as promoting volunteerism and creating safer more connected communities.

“A walk in the park” will take place at Clemente Park located at 1936 Henderson Avenue from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dunbar Community Policing Officers and groups of citizens from the community will walk in the park as a visual deterrence to crime. In addition, there will be fun activities for kids such as kickball and basketball and picnic style food to include hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks.

While the national spotlight is on the month of October for crime prevention, the activity is something FMPD asks citizens to do every day. “Crime prevention really is a walk in the park,” said Chief Doug Baker. “It’s as easy as locking your doors and reporting suspicious activity. We need citizens to take an active role in making our community safer.”

Police welcome citizens and members of the media to join them for a walk in the park.
