“FMPAL Boxers Gearing Up for National Championships”

On Saturday, July 27, 2013 the Fort Myers Police Athletic League (FMPAL) boxers will step in the ring to showcase their skills as they prepare for the 2013 PAL Boxing National Championships to be held in Oxnard, California in September. The sparring sessions are part of an open house to recruit future boxers and volunteers to help support the program.

The FMPAL Boxing Academy is the only program in town that produces championship boxers that win state, regional and national titles. The FMPAL Boxing Academy is home to the number one female boxer in the world, 2012 World Gold Medalist Tiara Brown and several other professional boxers.

Five boxers will be able to make the trip to California thanks to The Rotary Club of Fort Myers and proceeds from the club’s annual “Rotary Cup” fundraiser.   Steve Bowen, Past President of the Rotary Club and other members will be on hand to present a check to FMPAL. “We are honored to support the Fort Myers Police Athletic League,” said Bowen. “We selected FMPAL as the beneficiary of our golf tournament after seeing the great work they do to foster growth and success of young people in our community. We are extremely impressed with the program.”

FMPD Captain Willie Dennard oversees FMPAL and is grateful for the Rotary Club’s support that will allow the program to reach more children and provide more services. “The donation means the world to us,” said Dennard.  “FMPAL gives youth in our community the opportunity to participate in sports that otherwise couldn’t due to financial difficulties.  FMPAL allows kids to pursue their athletic dreams.”

PAL is a not-for-profit organization serving 400+ youth annually by providing athletic, educational and social programs to area children. The program supplies equipment, uniforms and transportation to participants at little or no cost.  All coaches and volunteers are from the Fort Myers Police Department and the local community. Light refreshments will be served at the event that is open to the community and members of the media on Saturday, July 27^th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the PAL Boxing Academy located at 2160 Alicia Street, Fort Myers.
