“FMPD Honors Officers at Award Ceremony”

On Friday, June 7, 2013 the Fort Myers Police Department honored several employees at a monthly award ceremony. FMPD strives every day to not only protect and serve the residents of the City of Fort Myers, but to make it a better place to live. “It is our policy to recognize employees of exemplary performance of their duties” said Chief Doug Baker. “We appreciate their heroics and the hard work that these men and women put in each day.”

Officer Jesus Ramos was honored for his outstanding service during the 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting the Special Olympics. Each year police departments around the world participate in a charitable effort to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics athletes. Officer Ramos was passionate, dedicated, and resourceful towards the cause.  Whether it was merchandise sales, Tip-A-Cop participation or the overall coordination between various agencies for the run, Officer Ramos went above and beyond in all facets. On April 19, 2013 the Lee County 10-mile Torch Run was a great success.  The Fort Myers Police Department’s overall participation raised more than $3,000 towards the worthy cause. Officer Ramos has already begun planning and discussing ideas to make next year’s event an even bigger success. Officer Ramos exemplifies the qualities we ask each member of the Department to display; Honor, Ethics, Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork.

Officer Dominic Zammit and Officer Terrence Butler were honored for their arrest of a robbery suspect. The officers had been dispatched to the intersection of Canal Street and Jackson Street in reference to a robbery with a firearm.  Upon arrival, the officers located two female victims who were robbed at gunpoint by two males on bicycles.  The suspects forcibly removed purses from each victim. After a brief neighborhood canvas, Officer Zammit and Officer Butler located two suspects matching the description of the perpetrators. The victims were brought to the location and they positively identified both suspects as the individuals who robbed them. The officers also located a bicycle that was used in the robbery along with a purse stolen from one of the victims. The officers are commended for their teamwork and good use of police skills which resulted in the removal of two criminals from the streets of Fort Myers.

Officer Alesha Morel and Officer Terrence Butler were honored for their outstanding performance investigating a call regarding a suspicious person armed with a gun. The officers were dispatched to the intersection of State Road 82 and Ford Street in reference to the suspect running across State Road 82 openly carrying a shotgun or rifle.  The suspect was described as wearing a white t-shirt, dark colored shorts, black gloves, and a black hat. The officers immediately canvased the area and located an individual matching the description of the suspect at the intersection of Lincoln Boulevard and Cuba Street.  The suspect was still in possession of the firearm.  Officer Morel and Officer Butler exited their patrol vehicles with their department issued firearms drawn. Both officers gave verbal commands ordering the suspect to drop the firearm. The suspect dropped the firearm and surrendered to the officers.  The recovered firearm was a Remington Woodsmaster long rifle.  The rifle had a full magazine with one bullet in the chamber ready to fire.  The suspect was arrested and charged accordingly. Officer Morel and Officer Butler are commended for their quick response and good use of their police skills that led to the immediate resolve of a potentially dangerous situation.
