The Cape Coral Police Department will host the inaugural Ashlee Swazey Memorial Gun Safety Seminar this Thursday April 26th.

The seminar will be at Police Headquarters, 1100 Cultural Park Blvd from 6:30pm-8:30pm.

The idea for the seminar came from Dave Swazey, who contacted Cape Coral Police wanting to do something to memorialize his daughter Ashlee who was killed as a result of the unsafe handling of a gun in 2010.

The event is for children ages kindergarten through high school and their parents. The younger children will watch a firearm safety video aimed at teaching them to tell an adult when they see a firearm, etc. The younger children will then complete activity books in another room while the middle and high school children and the parents hear a presentation by a Lee Memorial Hospital Trauma Surgeon on the impact of improper gun safety complete with a PowerPoint presentation.

Cape Coral Police Officers will also be on hand to give away gun locks to anyone who needs one and also demonstrate how they fit onto a gun.

All of the children will receive a certificate for completing the seminar. There is no charge to participate in this event. There is also no need to RSVP, simply register when you arrive at the Police Department.
