On Tuesday, November 15, 2011 the Fort Myers Police Department’s “Do the Right Thing” program will honor seven children for their good deeds. Awards will be presented to the following students at a ceremony in the City of Fort Myers Council Chambers at 3 p.m.:
Felix Percivall is in the first grade at Edison Park Elementary. During a recent stay at the hospital, Felix noticed that the hospital was in need of books and stuffed animals. So Felix decided to donate the items from his own personal collection. Felix chose some of his favorite books and toys and took them to the hospital in hopes of making other children feel better.
Jarred Higginson is in the second grade at Orangewood Elementary. Jarred was walking out to the parent pick-up area when he found a gold bracelet on the ground. Jarred immediately turned the bracelet in to a teacher. Turns out the bracelet belonged to another teacher and not only was it an expensive piece of jewelry it had even more sentimental value.
Alejandra Mayorga is a pre-kindergarten student at Tanglewood Elementary. Alejandra is a model student, eager to learn, respectful and cooperative. Recently a fellow classmate underwent surgery and lost her independence for several weeks. Alejandra took it upon herself to be the student’s support system at school during her recovery. For six weeks Alejandra eagerly assisted her fellow classmate.
Isabel Fernandez is a student at Edison Park Elementary. Isabel has shown great talent in the drama department. Isabel was cast in the important role as the Props Manager for the fifth grade play. Two students were unable to take on their responsibilities due to family scheduling conflicts. Isabel stepped in and took on the added responsibilities. She now manages the props, the set pieces on the stage and the three curtains. Isabel’s selfless contribution is a great testament to her work ethic, commitment and willingness to help.
Kaya Porter and Johnny Luster both are in the fifth grade at Edgewood Academy. Kaya and Johnny are members of the safety patrol. They have repeatedly demonstrated that they are “above the influence” taking the high road in un-wise social situations and gossip. The two have made good decisions when their peers may have opted for a different direction.
Andrew Harden Taylor is in the second grade at Tanglewood Elementary. Andrew observed several older students harassing a kindergartener in the school bathroom. They were laughing and teasing the child. Andrew felt he had to do something. So with a loud voice he said “stop laughing at him”. The older boys were shocked and left the bathroom. Andrew’s actions not only protected the younger child, he ended the situation without violence. He is an excellent role model.
The purpose of the “Do the Right Thing” program is to reinforce positive actions among local youth. It is also designed to enhance relationships between local law enforcement members and school-aged children. The media is encouraged to attend this rewarding event.
